Social Studies Project Timeline
The 5th Grade program this year is a 50 States Museum.  Each student is responsible for one state and will create an exhibit for that specific state.  The final program will be on May13th, at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria.  We will be using Centers and STRIPES time for the students to conduct research and work on some of their project, but some must be completed at home also.

Below are the due date timelines for this activity with side notes we discussed in class:

Time Line/Flow map - DUE April 16th

Multi flow thinking map demonstrating relationship between natural resources and economic activities - DUE April 23rd

Chamber of Commerce Poster - DUE April 30th

Political map of their state that includes major land features, major water features, Capital cities and Major cities.  They must make their own map, not copied from the internet. - DUE May 3rd

Rough draft of their board layout - DUE May 5th

2 Artifacts that symbolize the cultural characteristics of their states.  They must also write one paragraph for each artifact that describes the artifact and how it represents the cultural characteristic of their state.  DUE May 7th

Speech from the point of view of a famous person from their state about their state, its history and why it is an important part of the United States.  DUE May 10th

Final board (including a state flag) and a works cited page with a minimum of 5 sources listed, three of the sources must be print sources.  DUE May 12th

Costume of their famous person to be worn the night of the program MAY 13th

*** They will be making 2 graphs in class, but must bring their research when we make them.  They will make one graph that shows the temperature range and annual precipitation for each month of the year.  The second graph gives information on the population of their state.***

Friday, March 26th
Today was a busy day for being the last day before Spring Break.  The students took a Math CFA test today on Multiplication adn Division.  It was a long test for some of them, but they did their Personal Best.  We then went and picked up our Science Fair boards so they could go home tonight.  We presented book reports this afternooon and still have about 10 more to go when we return.  We took a quiz on the location of states and their capitals for the Western and Southwest regions.  I hope the students have a safe and happy Spring Break and will see them when they return on Tuesday, April 6th.
Tuesday, March 23
Today in math we worked with multiplication.  Student were given 4 random numbers (ex 2, 4, 6, 8) and then had to find a prodect that was between 2100 and 2200.  They enjoyed working with random numbers and solving open ended questions.  We then moved on to 5-digit number (ex:  2, 4, 6, 8, 9) and had to find a product between 40,000 and 45,000.  They have 2 sets of numbers to work with tonight for their homework (1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and find the product between 24,000 and 26,000 and also 3, 6, 7, 8, 9 and find a product between 60,000 and 65,000).  In Social Studies we made flash cards of the Western and Southwestern states, and put the name of the states and the capital as well.  We then discussed why the states are broken into Pacific and Mountain states, and started learning vocabulary for the section.  In Language Arts we started discussing homophones and identified many.  They will be given a set of homophones and have to draw a picture, write a definition, the part of speech and use it in a sentence later.
